College Scholarships Strategies To Use When Applying For Any Scholarship

There are definitely some do's and don'ts when applying for college scholarships. You'll want to make sure you pay attention to all of these gems. Some may seem very basic, but you'd be surprised how often people send in a scholarship application that gets scrapped because someone forgot to pay attention to one of these details.

Follow ALL The Directions To A "T"

First and foremost, all college scholarship applications will have specific directions on how to apply. BE SURE TO FOLLOW EACH AND EVERY DIRECTION AS IT IS OUTLINED.

Deadlines Are Exactly That

It if says postmarked by December 1, than make sure you get it in the mail a week ahead of time if you can. There's just no excuse for letting this one slide by but it happens all the time.

It's Your Responsibility To Get It There--No One Else's

And, if you really want to know if it got there, pay a little extra at the Post Office for delivery confirmation. Or, send in your materials so they arrive TWO WEEKS early and call to see if they were received so that you have time to resubmit if they got lost in the mail.

College scholarship decision committees won't care if it got lost in the mail (or if aliens stole it or whatever!). They will have plenty of applicants that got their materials in on time. Of course, use your judgement here. The larger the scholarship, the more care and effort to put into making sure your documents were received.

Check Your Spelling

Nothing will kill an application for gift money faster than a spelling error. Make the effort to PROOFREAD!

Make Sure People Can READ Your Application

If you have to handwrite your application, not what I would recommend, but if you do, be darn sure folks can read it. If your handwriting is terrible, ask someone to write while you dictate.

Also, don't use any fancy fonts on any essays you submit with your application. Stick to ones that are easy to read like Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica, etc. Those ones that look like special handwriting from the dark ages are a definite no-no!

Answer Every Question You Are Asked

Make sure you don't leave any questions blank. The questions are asked for a reason. Even if you think it's the craziest question in the world, you need to answer it as best you can.
