Make Your College Essay Stand Up And Get Noticed!

Your college essay does matter. In fact, it may be the most important part of your application.

Yes, your essay really will be read by an admissions officer. In fact, it can have a significant influence on whether or not you are offered acceptance.

Take the time to make sure your work is the best it can be.

Here are some great strategies to help you get going and write an excellent essay that will make your application stand out.

You've Got To Write For Whose Going To Read It

And, it's not going to be a professor with a Ph.D. in English! Nope. The majority of the time it will be a recent college graduate that became an admissions counselor as the first stop in their working career.

So, throw away your thesaraus!

You don't want to try and impress people with big words or long, complicated sentences. You are trying to communicate with your reader, not win a vocabulary contest!

I mean it. There are no bonus points for using words like "pompous" or "esoteric" in your college essay.

Consider The Goal Of Your Essay

The main objective is to get your reader's vote to offer you acceptance to their school. Yes, it's kind of like they are the membership committee for an exclusive club that you want to join. I know that sounds kind of "pompous" doesn't it?

But, it's the reality of the situation.

You need their vote. They've got lots of other people that want it, too.

So...

You Cannot Afford To Be Boring!

Seriously. An admissions officer is most likely going to have a very big pile of other applications and college essays to review that day. What if yours is at the bottom of the pile?

You need your essay to stand up and get their attention. Wake them up. Rejuvenate their soul. Make it be like guzzling three cans of Mountain Dew!

And...

You've Got To Make A Connection

Your essay needs to leave a lasting impression. No, it does not have to be a profound work of art. But, it does have to reach out and touch the reader.

You want to make an emotional connection. You don't have to bring them to tears. Or get them laughing out loud. You do need to be real.

How do you that best?

Be personal!

Reveal something about you. How you really are. Why you are the way you are. How you think. What truly matters to you.

To do that, you need to...

Write About Something You Love

It's easy for an admissions officer to tell if you are truly passionate about the subject of your college essay. Don't choose a topic just because you think it will impress your reader. That will only end up coming across as just that.

It really helps to write about something you've spent hours and hours reading about, doing, or is somehow an important part of who you are.

And...

Be You!

When an admissions officer reviews your application your essay has to "fit" everything else they see and read about you.

If you don't show a history of volunteering within your community but your essay talks about the importance of helping others, that will have a hollow ring to it. You don't want that. You want to share something real. Something they won't know just be reading the other parts of your application.

So, my advice is to...

Tell Them A Story

That's right. A story. Everyone loves a good story. Admissions officers included.

Write in the first person. Just be careful not to have lots and lots of sentences that begin with "I."

Be specific. Paint a picture for your reader. A vivid picture!

Give them the details they need to feel like they are there with you.

Finally...

Check Your Spelling!

I know that sounds really basic. It is. But, you'd be amazed at how many essays I've read over the years that had silly spelling mistakes. And, it does matter!

Use spell check. Have someone else proofread it. Twice!

Invest The Time

It will be a lot of work to do this well. Trust me, you need to put in the time.

You can do this.

Take it one step at a time. Give it your best shot.

That "thick" acceptance envelope will make it all worth it!
