How To Choose A College Major
A lot of students fret over how to choose a college major. And, probably rightfully so. Not investing the time and resources to discover the right major for you can end up costing you lots of time and even more tuition dollars!
Many college curriculums today are not extremely flexible when it comes to the courses you need to graduate. That means that based on your major, you have to take very specific courses in order to graduate. That's ok if you know early on what you want to study. For those that don't it can be hard to choose courses that will apply to just about any major they ultimately decide upon.
Many students do change their college major today (at least once). More than 50% according to recent figures from the National Center for College and University Admissions. That's a lot!
Unfortunately, that means many students are taking longer and longer to graduate and you know what that adds up to---more tuition bills!
You don't have to allow that to happen. It is ok to be undecided. I remember being clueless about what I wanted to do when I was a high school senior. I wish someone could have helped me like I am trying to help you with this web site.
You can find the right major for you. The first step is to find the right career area for you. Once you do that, it's easy to learn what college majors are the best preparation for certain careers.

Of course, you could just do what a lot of students do and think about the courses in high school you enjoyed and pick a college major based on that. That's better than just picking one out of a hat, and a good place to start. But, you really need to do more than that.
You will need to do some self-exploration to get this right. That just means asking yourself some real questions and truly thinking about them.
There's just so many things out there to choose from you say. That's true. And, isn't that a good thing? The great news is that you get to choose.
And, I really recommend choosing a major for reasons that are important to you. Not because you think being a CSI looks really cool on TV. Yes, you do want to find something that you think is cool. And, if you see or hear about something that interests you, check it out. That's the key. Lots of good research.
Sounds too much like work for you? That's disappointing. It is work. And, if you don't want the rest of your life to feel like work, if you'd rather that you could find a career where you wake up every day and can't wait to get to work you NEED TO DO THIS. Invest the time. It will be worth it.
