What's An Activity Resume and Do I Have To Do One?

An activity resume is a summary of all the good things you can offer a college if they were to accept you for admission. It is more than just a simple list of the clubs and sports you have been involved in through the years. Think of it more as a personal highlight review. Or, even better, picture the activity resume as your opportunity to put the most compelling reasons why you would be a great addition to that particular school.

It Can Be An Effective Strategy To Boost Your Application

Using this strategy as a supplement to your other college application materials can be a great way to sum up the strong qualities you can offer a college. It shows you are serious about the process and want to be sure that the person reviewing your applicant file has a solid picture of who you are and what you can bring to that school.

It Helps Add A Little Personality To Your Materials

A well done piece also gives you an opportunity to be a little creative if you want to add some personality to your transcripts, test scores and all the other paperwork. Be careful not to be TOO creative though!

It Is Worth The Effort

As a former Dean who has reviewed many, many applicant files, I always appreciated having this overview to review after I had taken a look at all the other documents in a student's file. It helped me to sum up the candidate's strong points while making my notes. Of course, that is, if it was well done! And, unfortunately some were not. Those kind of left me with more questions and obviously did not help make the case to admit the student.

In my opinion, it's well worth the effort to construct a quality activity or personal highlight resume to submit in addition to all the other admission requirements. A lot of colleges are now making this a part of their actual process anyway so it would be a good idea to start working on yours and use this strategy to help your application be even stronger. Be sure to put in the necessary time to make sure it highlights your strengths and leaves the reader with a positive picuture of what you can bring to their campus.
